Present Mess on Wall Street

6

Now there is great gain in(N) godliness(O) with contentment, 7for(P) we brought nothing into the world, and[c] we cannot take anything out of the world. 8But(Q) if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. 9But(R) those who desire to be rich fall into temptation,(S) into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that(T) plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10For the love of money is a root of(U) all kinds of evils. (1 Timothy 6:6-10 - ESV)

I think that many of us do not get contentment with Godliness. We try to find contentment in our stuff, our happiness, and our relationships. We cannot take anything out of the world when it is our time to go. We worship false idols instead of God. We strive, and seek after earthly things. Money in of itself is not evil, and the love of money is evil. The other thing we do is forsake the sovereignty of God. Government is not the almighty saviour.

Many people have speculated, commented and debated over the present mess on Wall Street, yet greed has driven the banking industry to loan people money who shouldn’t have loans, and make risky investments on those loans. Now we have to pay the piper what is do. I know many Americans do not want the Federal Government to bail out Wall Street, but what can we do at this point. I just hope that the law makers on Washington actually come up with rules and regulations that will help govern Wall Street where this won’t happen again. Now, I know that there are those who hold to ideals that the market will govern itself, but in my opinion they always leave out the fact the some of us are greedy and love money to the point where it can become evil.

39

Yesterday I turned 39.  I had a very nice birthday.  What I got for my birthday was a new fitness class after work (conditioning, circuit training), and Beckie made a fabulous Mexican dinner last night.  Hopefully, I’ll be around for another 39 years.

In other things, Beckie and I are attending Worthington Christian Church in Worthington, Ohio.  They have contemporary services, they have made us feel welcome, and have a dynamic men’s ministry.  Very different from Vineyard.

Also we both are on facebook which you can search under Scott Sloan and Beckie Ashby Sloan.

Quote of the Day - John Eldredge

And it makes me realize how crucial it is to get my validation from God. It’s hard to navigate all the needs and demands in a broken world. Jesus said, “The poor you will always have with you,” meaning, there is always going to be more need than you can meet. It’s hard to navigate my own motives. The enemy is a constant accuser. There is just no way out of this mess except to place the verdict on my life in God’s hands, and to draw from him the validation or correction on how I’m living. If I have a settled confidence in his opinion, then I’m free to live. If I lose sight of that, o man, it makes a mess of things.

“God, how am I doing?” I need to take my bearings here. It’s the only true north.

Our Wonderful Honeymoon

Here is a picture from our window during my devotional time during the mornings at the Isle of Palms, SC.  We had such a wonderful time enjoying the sun, surf, beach, and island fare food.

Tomorrow we embark on a short tour of the Holy City of Charleston, SC before heading to the heart of NASCAR country of Mooresville, NC to visit some old friends of mine from Columbus.

On Saturday, it is back to Ohio to visit with my in-laws, and see everyone at Westside Church of Christ who have have been praying for our marriage.  In a way it will be like a homecoming even though both Beckie and I reside in Columbus.

We Did It

Beckie Ashby and I were married yesterday, September 12, 2008.  It was a glorious day.  Both families were present, our best friends were able to join us, and we had lunch at the Olive Garden.  Currently we are in Lexington, Ky on our way to Isle of Palms, SC for our honeymoon.

Being single in your 30’s, you never would think that this day would finally come, but it did.  Beckie and I both love the beach.  The beach is peaceful, calm when there are not any hurricanes, and lovely to behold.

Two Days till Wedding Day

Tomorrow on September 12, 2008, Beckie Ashby will become Mrs. Richard Scott Sloan.  It will be a wonderful day, and terrifying day at the same time.  Terrifying because everyone (the families) need to be on their best behaviour.  One would think that this day has not come fast enough, or can’t believe that it has already arrived.

Anyway, I am looking forward to spending the rest of my life with Rebecca Ashby Sloan for better or worse.

Verse of the Day

6“But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’[a] 7‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,[b] 8and the two will become one flesh.’[c] So they are no longer two, but one. 9Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.” (Mark 10:6-8)

Update

I am at the Library checking email, facebook, etc.  By my friend Mike G, he is streaming the new Chris Tomlin album, and it is great!

With other things, Beckie are beginning part one of her move to Columbus this weekend.  We are getting some gently used furniture from her cousin Ginger in Dayton, OH this weekend.  We are also going to be cleaning and organizing my apartment and getting ready for the big move the following weekend.
